BASKETBALL EQUIPMENTSBall A basketball is the major equipment of the game of basketball. The balls usually range in size from only a few inches in diameter to nearly a foot in diameter which are used in training sessions to improve the players’ skills. The standard size according to NBA is 9.5 to 9.85” (24.1 - 25 cm) in diameter. Practically all the basketballs have an inflatable inner rubber bladder which is wrapped in various layers of fibre and then enclosed and finally covered with a shabby and little rough surface made either from leather, rubber, or synthetic blend. On every ball, there is a small opening to increase or decrease the pressure. The outermost layer of the ball is divided by lines called ribs that are dug in beneath the surface of the ball in various configurations. They are generally made of contrasting colour. The commonly used colour scheme of a basketball is - an orange surface with black ribs and a possible logo of the brand. Basketballs are differently made for indoor and outdoor use. For indoor use- balls are generally made of leather or absorbent composite and are considerably expensive than all-surface balls due to the material. For all-surface use balls are generally made of rubber or durable composites. The abrasiveness of asphalt, dirt and moisture present in an outdoor environment usually ruins an indoor ball within a very short span of time and thus an all-surface ball is recommended for recreational players.

A backboard is a raised (by means of a pole or sometimes attached to wall/background) vertical board with a basket attached; which is made of a flat, rigid piece of material a synthetic material, often Plexiglas and is usually rectangular as used in NBA. For non professional games, backboards may be oval or a fan-shape. On the other hand, nowadays professional backboards are mostly made of glass. The first ever glass backboard was used at the Men's Gymnasium at Indiana University by the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball team. Dimensions: 18” (45.72 cm) high, 2 ft (60.96 cm) wide. Basketball Hoop/ Basket A basketball hoop or basket is a steel rim of 18” (45.72 cm) in diameter with an attached net mounted to a basketball backboard through a flexible connection. The shock of a basket or a dunk (at time of attempt to basket) is absorbed by that flexible connecting part, so that the rim goes back to a horizontal position once again and doesn’t breaks off. The top of the basket/hoop is exactly at 10 ft (3.05 m) above the ground and 4 ft (1.21 m) inside the baseline. While there might be variations in the dimensions of the court and backboard, the height of basket is considered important; a difference of even a few inches can have an adverse effect on shooting.
